Why Is My HVAC System Freezing Up?

Finding a layer of ice on the indoor evaporator coil, on the refrigerant lines, or coating the outdoor unit is a sign something is wrong, not a sign your system is cooling extra well. A frozen coil actually cools worse than a clean one, and running the system while it's iced over can cause more serious damage the longer it continues.

What Causes the Ice

Freezing almost always comes down to one of two root problems, each with several possible causes underneath it.

  • Restricted airflow — a clogged filter, blocked return vents, closed supply registers, or a dirty blower can all starve the coil of the warm air it needs to stay above freezing
  • Low refrigerant charge — a leak drops the pressure in the system, and low-pressure refrigerant runs cold enough to freeze the moisture in the air passing over the coil
  • Failing blower motor or fan — even with a clean filter, a fan that isn't moving enough air across the coil can trigger the same freezing pattern
  • Running the system in cold outdoor temperatures — cooling mode below a certain outdoor temperature can cause icing even on a healthy system

What to Do Before We Arrive

The most useful thing a Charlotte homeowner can do is shut the system off and let it thaw completely — running it while iced over pushes water into places it shouldn't be and can strain the compressor. Switch the thermostat fan setting to "on" (not auto) to help air circulate and speed up the thaw. Check the filter while you're waiting; a dirty one is worth swapping out even before we get there. If the ice comes back quickly after a clean start, that points toward refrigerant rather than airflow, and it's worth a proper diagnosis rather than repeated thaw-and-restart cycles.
